Hello from the home stretch. After six months on the road, I’m heading back to the office—and I’ve never been more grateful for the team that made this journey possible.
We set out to explore Australia’s lower half, and what unfolded was nothing short of epic. A month along the Murray River immersed us in wine country and river history—paddle steamers, wool industry heritage, massive fruit farms, and horizon-wide sunsets that took our breath away. We tracked down inspiring silo art and soaked in the landscape’s stories.
From there, we pushed up through the red centre of South Australia via Coober Pedy, where underground living and painted desert landscapes gave way to cool, clear nights under the stars. We made our way to Yalara and Uluru—spectacular from every angle. Walking, helicopter rides, camel treks through that ancient landscape—just stunning.
Then came the adventure that nearly broke us: three days across the Great Central Road through desert, dirt, rock, and sand corrugations. We earned that certificate at Tjukayirla Roadhouse (Australia’s most remote roadhouse), and after repairs at a mining camp in Leonora, we pushed on to explore Western Australia’s goldfields, wildflowers, and coastline.
Western Australia stole our hearts. Rocks everywhere—each one unique and awe-inspiring, telling stories thousands of years old. Arches, bridges, caves, gorges, cliffs, and erosion sculptures like ancient forgotten cities. Walking across sand dunes, through wildflower gardens, giant forests, and beaches made entirely of shells. The south-west corner became one of our favourite spots: stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, epic coastline, sea lions, dolphins, and far too much Margaret River wine and food.
South Australia tempted us again. Swimming with sealions and dolphins in the icy waters. Beautiful Adelaide, oysters at Streaky Bay (so good I reordered), the Grampians for postcard views, more caves, and yes—more rocks. Oh and Maggie Beer’s kitchen of course – so much good food, no amount of trekking up mountains was going to pay for that!
But here’s what made this adventure truly epic: the trust. Trust in my team at Cupcake to keep the wheels turning while I was out there chasing sunsets. That confidence—knowing our clients were in capable hands, our projects were moving forward, our culture was thriving—that’s been one of the highlights of the entire trip.
The parallels to business are impossible to miss. Out here, living in a 15ft home, we’ve refined our process down to an art form. Everyone knows their role. We’re flexible when things go sideways. We move as one unit. It’s exactly how Cupcake works best: clear processes, capable people, shared purpose, and the flexibility to enjoy the ride even when speed bumps appear.
I’m genuinely looking forward to getting back to my desk, connecting face-to-face with our team and clients, and bringing this renewed energy into our work. But I’ll carry this magic with me—the reminder that when you build something people believe in, you can trust them to hold it down while you go gallivanting around the countryside.
