The unexpected connection between baking and branding
It’s the confused and slightly disappointed look from couriers that always gets me. When they ask, “Do you design cupcakes?”—hinting at the hope for a free sample—I have to explain that we’re actually designers of the visual communications kind, not the edible cupcake variety!
While it’s not usually a business issue (95% of our clients come through referrals), many don’t know the backstory behind our name, which goes something like this…
After the war, in 1946, my Grandfather Victor Miller started Millers Bakery in the country town of Narrabri. In the late 70’s, my dad took over the business and he modernised the bakery, keeping up with the latest food trends. Growing up in and around the bakery, I quickly learned that working with food was hard work: long hours on your feet and A LOT of cleaning. While I truly admired my family’s dedication, work ethic and their role as community leaders (my Grandfather Mayor for many years and my Dad heavily involved with the community development and Rotary), I realised my business passion lay elsewhere.
Instead of following in their footsteps as a third-generation baker, I wanted to pursue my creativity and help businesses through design. However, I still wanted to give a nod to my family’s heritage in the business name. So in 2005, Cupcake Design Studio was born.
Today, we’ve risen to new heights thanks to the incredible talent within our studio team and the trust and collaboration of our clients. It’s been quite the journey—and we’re excited to keep creating fresh ideas for businesses just like yours!
